Pedagogical basis for Write Now
Write Now is designed as a free, supplementary tool for short reading, spelling and writing activities. It supports practice; it does not document a learning effect for individual children.
Purpose and limits
Teachers, reading specialists and parents can use Write Now when children are working with sounds, letters, words and short sentences. The adult chooses the exercise, introduces the focus and follows up on the child’s attempts.
Write Now is not a test, a diagnostic tool, a complete instructional programme or a replacement for teaching, assessment or targeted support. The platform does not claim that completing an exercise demonstrates independent reading or spelling.
How the exercises work
- Choice of exercise area: The adult selects an area according to the focus of current teaching or practice.
- Sound, image and letters: The child hears a word, sees an image and chooses letters to spell the word.
- Support for the next attempt: When a child chooses a letter that does not belong in the word, the keyboard offers fewer options for the next attempt.
- Local exercise overview: The browser can show whether an exercise has been started or completed on that device.
- Adult follow-up: The adult can talk about sounds and spellings, and ask the child to read or write words beyond the screen.
How the research relates to Write Now
Research supports explicit attention to connections between speech sounds and letters as one part of beginning reading and spelling instruction. It also describes the value of practice that connects phonological awareness, letter knowledge and word reading.
Those findings inform the design principles behind Write Now. They do not prove that Write Now itself produces a particular outcome, nor do they determine the best exercise sequence for every child. Teachers and reading specialists should place the activities within their own planned teaching.
